چکیده

The successful rootingof leafy cuttings inivolves three physiologieally distinct processes: initiation of root primordia; development of true roots from these initials; and mainitenance of the cutting as ani excised organ during the rooting. The first of these, where it does niot take place sponitanieously, cani be brought about in many plants by treatment with auxini. The second (outgrow^th of the roots) inivolves the formationi of cell-wall anid protoplasm; it therefore requires the supply of carbohydrates anid nitrogenous materials, together with such special substances as may be needed for root ('rowth. Normally all of these materials would be supplied fromii the leaves or froilm storage in the stem. Too little attention has been paid up to now to the third process, the maintenanice of the cutting, which, in view of the special coniditions that obtain when leaves are severed from the planit, is of great importainee. Thus, as pointed out by CHIBNALL (4), the detached leaf of many plants, ineluding Phaseolus, undergoes a rapid and extensive proteolysis. The present experimiients were, therefore, desigrned to shed some light oln the second and third of these processes. It was otur intention to study the influeniee of nutritiol, especially niitrogen niutritioni, anid other external chemical factors oni the rootiugcr and mainitenance of leafy herbaceous material. Since initernial factors must also be conisidered in such a study, attenitioni was paid to the r6le of auLxiii anid also to the separate roles of the leaves anld the stem. Materials and methods

Physiological and molecular analysis of the interaction between aluminium toxicity and drought stress in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)

Aluminium (Al) toxicity and drought are two major factors limiting common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) production in the tropics. Short-term effects of Al toxicity and drought stress on root growth in acid, Al-toxic soil were studied, with special emphasis on Al-drought interaction in the root apex. Root elongation was inhibited by both Al and drought. Combined stresses resulted in a more severe i...

Visualization of highly dynamic F-actin plus ends in growing phaseolus vulgaris root hair cells and their responses to Rhizobium etli nod factors.

Legume plants secrete signaling molecules called flavonoids into the rhizosphere. These molecules activate the transcription of rhizobial nod genes, which encode proteins involved in the synthesis of signaling compounds named Nod factors (NFs). NFs, in turn, trigger changes in plant gene expression, cortical cell dedifferentiation and mitosis, depolarization of the root hair cell membrane poten...

In BPS1 Downregulated Roots, the BYPASS1 Signal Disrupts the Induction of Cortical Cell Divisions in Bean-Rhizobium Symbiosis

BYPASS1 (BPS1), which is a well-conserved gene in plants, is required for normal root and shoot development. In the absence of BPS1 gene function, Arabidopsis overproduces a mobile signalling compound (the BPS1 signal) in roots, and this transmissible signal arrests shoot growth and causes abnormal root development. In addition to the shoot and root meristem activities, the legumes also possess...

Promotion of nod Gene Inducers and Nodulation in Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) Roots Inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense Cd.

Inoculation of Phaseolus vulgaris with Azospirillum brasilense Cd promoted root hair formation in seedling roots and significantly increased total and upper nodule numbers at different concentrations of Rhizobium inoculum. In experiments carried out in a hydroponic system, A. brasilense caused an increase in the secretion of nod gene-inducing flavonoids, as was observed by nod gene induction as...

Comparison of urban solid waste leachate and vermi-compost as foliar spray and root media on nutritional performance of Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Two laboratory and greenhouse experiments were carried out to compare and evaluate the nutrition of Phaseolus vulgaris L. plant with foliar spray and root media. In laboratory, effect of four treatments; N- nutrition solution; Urban solid waste leachate (USWL); vermi-compost extract and control (distilled water) on germination and seeding growth of Phaseolus vulgaris L. was examined for 10 days...
